ZealCore technology integrated in world leading train manufacturer’s system platform
April 2008
Bombardier Transportation has chosen ZealCore's System Recorder and System Debugger to enhance the visibility and the observability of its train control systems. ZealCore’s technology is now integrated with Bombardier Transportation’s system platform BOMBARDIER MITRAC* where VxWorks is the RTOS.
-“With limited support from ZealCore it was uncomplicated to make the integration into our system platform. ZealCore’s products now give us new and better possibilities to analyze event histories and system behaviour” says Anders Östmark, Manager Software Products at Bombardier Transportation.
Smart recording
In order to collect diagnostic information for facilitating debugging, system developers have traditionally had to write their own diagnostic program code, a method that has several disadvantages: Diagnostic data collection not only requires considerable system resources, using CPU power intended for the target application; data collection itself also influences the system behaviour, often causing unwanted side effects, so called “probe-effects”, or “Heisenbugs”.
The key to ZealCore’s technology lies in the smart, economic recording mechanism of data for offline analysis, which requires a minimal amount of data. Systems performance is only affected marginally. This means that the recording functionality can remain within the deployed system, ensuring that it behaves exactly the same during field operation and development, hence eliminating the probe-effect.
ZealCore was founded in 2001 within Mälardalen RealTime Research Centre, MRTC, and was spun off in 2004. The founders Henrik Thane, and Kristian Sandström both remain active in the company. ZealCore’s investors include KTH Chalmers Capital, The Swedish Industrial Development Fund and SEB Venture Capital.
*BOMBARDIER MITRAC is trademark of Bombardier Inc. or its subsidiaries

Read the White Paper on System Debugging

Abstract
In a world of computers with ever increasing complexity and pervasiveness, there is an increasing need for debugging methods that can tackle system level faults, where reproducibility and observability of multiple interacting programs and subsystems can be dealt with holistically, and where in field debugging is as important as predeployment debugging.
In this paper we describe System Debugging as the next step into which traditional debugging methods need to evolve in order understand complex failure situations, by means of holistically recording and replaying software and hardware faults.
